Amazon Kindle Sells Out

amazon_kindle_reading.jpg

Despite my rather low opinion of the device, it seems the Amazon Kindle has sold completely through its first batch:

A notice on the Kindle pages on the Amazon web store said "heavy customer demand" for the device meant it would be out of stock until 3 December.

Since its launch on 19 November the device has been widely examined but opinions about it are mixed.

It has won praise for being easy to use but many have criticised the way it forces people to pay for free content.

No kidding, $.10 to convert your documents to the Amazon Kindle format, and $0.99 for blogs like Boing Boing, which are freely available online. Even Cory Doctorow at Boing Boing doesn't like Amazon's policies.

It also seems that Amazon wants as few pictures of the Kindle posted or printed as possible, as they have no easily available press images of the Kindle for me to grab for your pleasure. I keep having to screen shot all the images they have buried in those annoying Flash promos to get a decent image of the Kindle. Certainly makes reporting on the Kindle just that much harder.

What'll really surprise me is if demand actually stays high. Then I'll have to figure out just exactly what it is people see in an ugly $400 DRM'd eBook reader.
