Gelaskins: For the Customization Freak In You
I admit it, I am a customization whore. I love having my gadgets and accessories match my personality rather than carrying around that same old white iPod everyone else has. I have bought stickers and decals for my various consoles and handhelds in an attempt to find something cool, but I am inevitably disappointed. I either put the thing on wrong and have to remove it, causing the corners to bend up and never stick down again or I try to remove the decal months later and end up spending hours with Goof Off trying to remove the sticky junk left behind.
When Tiny and I attended the Digital Life Holiday showing last week, I was instantly drawn to the Gelaskins booth. Here they were, decals for every laptop and iPod you could imagine with some really amazing designs. Of course, my inner customizer came out and I looked over the table, my eyes filled with longing, secretly hoping that here I may have finally found the answer to my prayers. And I was right.
Gelaskins have been around for a while and they have managed to collect some incredible artists and designers. Their range of products is impressive covering Mac and PC laptops, Razr Phones, iPhones and the full range of iPods: iPod Touch, Classic, Video, Nano (1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen.), Mini, and 4th Gen. iPods. Coming soon will also be skins for Nintendo DS and PSP.
The friendly guy at the table was more than happy to give Tiny and I a couple samples to try out and as soon as we got home, I went on a decal frenzy. The first thing I noticed was the high quality of the prints. Very nicely done with a glossy finish, printed on a heavy duty 3M decal. I started with my laptop which I figured would be the easiest. I was able to easily place the decal on and subsequently pick it back up to move it until it was placed properly. Just to test it out, I took it off and too my delight, no bent corners and no sticky residue. I put it back on with the same amount of ease, pushed out the air bubbles and was ready to go.
Next up was my iPod Video. I had purchased this heavy duty rubber case for it when I first got it and one of the things I noticed when I removed it was how light and thin it was. I had forgotten since it had been on for so long. Pulling out my iPod Gelaskin which was in an awesome steampunk deign (pictured), I was glad to see that it came with a screen protector. Putting this skin on was a bit trickier due to the thin parts surrounding the screen, but I managed to get it on without much effort and the result was a beautiful, iPod that garners many compliments when I take it out in public. The thin, resilient Gelaskin kept the iPod at its same thin, lightweight size, making it much easier to carry in my pocket than with the old rubber case.
I would highly recommend Gelaskins to any of my fellow customization aficionados as the best product of its kind that I have used. The prices are fairly reasonable ranging from $29.95 for a laptop skin (12" - 17"), $12.95 - $14.95 for iPod skins and $14.95 for phone skins. For iPhone users, you can even download FREE custom wallpapers that match your chosen skin. A terrific, reasonably priced stocking stuffer for yourself or your favorite gadget freak.
