Review: Vibe Duo Headphones

The Digital Life show in NYC yielded some interesting finds. As I have been doing so much traveling, I was really drawn more towards the smaller items. After I finally tore myself away from the Gelaskins booth, I made my way across the aisle to check out the Vibe Duo earbud headphones from V-Moda. I have been on the market for some new headphones since I lost mine during my jaunt to E for All. The headphones that come packed with the various Apple devices are always incredibly uncomfortable to me. Something akin to sticking trashcan lids in your ears, they never quite fit right and always seem to fall out of my ears.
Needless to say, I was delighted when the lovely gal behind the table handed me a pair to try out, thus solving my headphone dilemma in one swoop. I have always thought thought of all headphones to be fairly similar as far as sound and comfortability with some slight variations. But, five minutes with the Vibe Duo proved that I was wrong.
Upon plugging them into my iPod and subsequently my ears, I noticed immediately how comfortable they were. After a few minutes it was like I wasn't wearing anything in my ears at all. They sounded incredible and blocked out almost all the outside noise. They came with three different sizes of silicon fittings to accommodate any size ears. This is particularly useful if, like me, your ear canals are slightly different sizes (yes, I am a circus freak).
The pair I got are also compatible with the iPhone and have a nice discreet microphone and removable clip. A small button on the side of the mic allows you to switch between calls or forward through your music (note: this does not work on the iPod). Another nice feature is the cloth covered wires that seem to tangle a bit less that the rubber ones and when they do tangle, are much easier to get back to normal.
At a cool $100, these are not earphones for the casual listener or someone who is prone to losing things. But, if you are an audiophile or simply value your listening experience, they are well worth the price.

One way or another, Microsoft will try to sell you a phone.
I owned a pair of the V-Moda Vibe headphones (not Duo) and they felt good in my ears (after a period of adjustment) and sounded great. I'd definitely recommend investing in a good case and putting them away properly every time, though. Even though I don't think I'm terribly rough on headphones, I also don't baby them. As a result, less than six months after I bought them, the plastic around the earbuds started to wear away, leaving the wires exposed to fray and finally break.
For the meticulous, kid glove types who want great sound, I'd still say they're worth it despite the durability problems I experienced. But I probably won't buy another pair for myself any time soon.
