2007: Apple's Dream Come True Or Nightmare On The Horizon?

Are you an Apple fan(boy)? Do you absolutely believe in the superiority of Mac OSX over Windows? Do you have "discussions" with your friends about why they shouldn't have wasted money on a new Windows machine, but instead should have made the jump to Mac, even though you know they are an avid game and didn't want to have to deal with dual booting or buying a Mac Pro to get the graphics card they need or finding Mac compatible games? *cough* Excuse me, not sure where that came from...
In any case, if you are any of the above, or if you've read any article in any tech publication this year, you'd know that Apple is having a banner year in 2007, propelled by the success of the iPhone and the launch of Leopard. It seems that Apple's name has been in the headlines every day this year. With that kind of publicity comes more wide-spread acceptance as well, and one has to wonder if that's necessarily a good thing.
Datamation has posted an interesting perspective on Apple's recent success that is definitely worth taking a look at. Hardcore Apple fans be warned, they are a few very legitimate questions raised in the article. If Apple chooses to push forward in the market place, they may have to make a few changes to gain mainstream attention, which could force an identity shift in the company.
After a year like this, it's easy for us all to forget that Mac OS X is still on the up and coming as an operating platform. While I think many an Apple fan would like to see the OS skyrocket into general use, one has to think what kind of sacrifices Apple and Apple's fans are willing to make to get there.

There is another article over on Cnet about the Apple fan mentality that I found to be very interesting, but not quite on point with this post. Although a bit dramatic at points (comparing mac vs pc debate to religious wars? really?), it's a pretty good read as well.
