Custom iPhone Ringtones Via Garage Band

Apple seems to opening up its iPhone piece by piece, hinting at new functionality from time to time. It almost makes you feel like someone in Cupertino is listening to consumers, and what's more, making note of what they are saying. And somewhere in the equation, they find a way to add a new piece to the iPhone puzzle that people have been asking for from the start: Customized Ringtones.
Apple has posted a how-to guide for getting custom ringtones on your iPhone on its website. You can now make your very own 40 second clip for every person in your phonebook. Well, ok, not everyone can. You have to own a Mac. And you can only use Garage Band 4.1.1. The fact that you need to use Garage Band does mean that you won't be able to use protected music, but it is still a nice touch to be able to make ringtones on your own.
I want to be pissed at Apple for only making this option available to Mac owners, but I just can't. It's a shrewd business move. Lure the masses in with a cool gadget, then pull on the wire and hook them into you hardware and OS with even cooler functionality (I'm reminded of the early days of the iPod and iTunes). In any case, happy ring-toning!

3D iPhone glasses. Why?
This could also be a call for all those poor PC-only folks to buddy up with Mac Men (and Women). I haven't tried this, but I can only imagine that if I create a ringtone in Garage Band and share it to iTunes, I'd be able to take that resulting file and share it with PC people, no? I'll have to give it a shot when I get homo. I mean, home.
Tee hee.
I just tried it, and it works flawlessly. Yay!
