Rumorama: 3G iPhone A Certainty With Japan Release?

CNN Money reports that NTT Docomo is competing with Softbank Mobile Corp. in Japan for the exclusive rights to sell the iPhone in Japan. That's all well and good, but what does that mean for us here in the US, or elsewhere where the iPhone is being sold right now?
The kicker is Japan doesn't have an EDGE network. That means that if the iPhone is released over there, it would have to be a 3G iPhone. This confirms earlier rumours that a 3G iPhone is indeed coming next year.
For those of you waiting for faster mobile data access on the iPhone: next year looks very good.
Personally, I can't wait for the release of the iPhone in Japan so that Apple can finally flip the switch and add Japanese input to the iPhone. Chatting with Japanese friends in transliterated Japanese just looks wrong and leads to confusion.
