HD Format War Update: Sales Through 12/16/2007

nielsen_videoscan_12-30-2007.jpg

Welcome to another edition of the HD Format War Update from the front lines! This week sees HD-DVD gaining 15 points over the previous week against Blu-ray on the wings of The Bourne Ultimatum on HD-DVD/DVD. Packing both the HD and SD versions in one box certainly helped Bourne to infiltrate the list to the top.

Blu-ray still commanded a 2-to-1 sales lead on HD-DVD, and the year and overall sales percentages remain constant this week.

Another big name release reflected on this week's chart is the dual format release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by Warner Bros. The Blu-ray version managed to just edge out the HD-DVD version on the sales chart, selling at a rate of 6-to-5 against the HD-DVD version. Combined; however, they easily outsold any other movie released on HD this week, and if you add the Years 1-5 Blu-ray gift set, the Potter boy kicked all kinds of ass this week.

Old Blu-ray faithful 300 is still hanging on at #9 in the charts. Frankly, I'm surprised it's stuck around this long. The movie's got legs (and abs, and chests, and mmmm...)

The top 10 HD disc sales chart for sales ending 12/16/2007:

  1. The Bourne Ultimatum (HD-DVD/DVD)
  2. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Blu-ray)
  3. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Blu-ray)
  4. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (HD-DVD)
  5. Planet Earth: The Complete Series (HD-DVD)
  6. Superbad (Blu-ray)
  7. Casino Royale (Blu-ray)
  8. Harry Potter: Years 1-5 Gift Set (Blu-ray)
  9. 300 (Blu-ray)
  10. Spider-Man 3 (Blu-ray)

Was that the only way to buy the new Bourne flick, as a bundle?

@Jesse James:

No, it also comes in a DVD only release, but the HD-DVDs all have a DVD version as well.
