HD Format War Update: Sales Through 01/20/2008

... And the second week of pain for the HD-DVD camp is over.

Following right on heels of the news that HD-DVD player sales have plummeted following Warner Brother's announcement to go Blu-ray exclusive, sales of HD-DVD discs have likewise dropped off a cliff. Blu-ray outsold HD-DVD this week by a ratio of nearly 5 to 1.

For the second week in a row, the top 10 HD disc seller chart is devoid of HD-DVD titles as well, painting a bleak picture if this keeps up.

Toshiba; however, is still holding on, and Home Media Magazine reports that they will be paying for and airing an ad during the Super Bowl to promote HD-DVD to the football watching masses.

It seems the Blu-ray camp is not buying a spot in the Super Bowl, so there will be no back and forth.

Will all those new HDTV owners seeing an advert for HD-DVD during the Super Bowl influence the sales figures? We'll have to wait for the results after the Super Bowl.

The top 10 HD discs for the week ending January 20, 2008:

  1. Good Luck Chuck (Blu-ray)
  2. 3:10 to Yuma (Blu-ray)
  3. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Blu-ray)
  4. Planet Earth: The Complete Series (Blu-ray)
  5. 300 (Blu-ray)
  6. Ratatouille (Blu-ray)
  7. Superbad (Blu-ray)
  8. Resident Evil: Extinction (Blu-ray)
  9. Blade Runner: Collector's Edition (Blu-ray)
  10. Mr. Woodcock (Blu-ray)
