Internet Breaks Across Two Continents

art.dubai.gi.jpg

The internet broke today across swaths of Asia and North Africa, including the Middle East. Two damaged undersea cables have been pointed to as the cause of the sudden and severe outage, although the source of the damage is still unknown (I blame Cloverfield).

Businesses in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Pakistan and India are all pretty much screwed at the moment, and the damage might take as long as a week to be repaired. So while the petty bastard in me raises an eyebrow at the thought of stemming the annoying telemarketer calls I get every day from that part of the world, the outage will exact a very serious toll on those regions affected - by both damaging businesses and crippling public services.

Israel, which uses a different route to get its net fix, remains unaffected - as do Iraq and Lebanon.
