Rumorama: iPhone Firmware 1.1.3 Details In The Wild

iPhone_v1-1-3_firmware.jpg

The Internet is rumbling with rumours regarding Gear Live's leak of the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware including screenshots, videos, and details on its new features.

The leaked feature list so far:

  • Google's "My Location" cell phone tower triangulation pseudo-GPS feature is being added to Google Maps on the iPhone.
  • Also added to Google Maps: The ability to drop a pin on the map and bookmark that location or get directions to/from it (for when an address isn't enough), and a hybrid satellite/map view like the desktop version of Google Maps.
  • The ability to rearrange your home screen's icons, including changing the icons in the Dock to whatever you like and having multiple pages of icons. No doubt this is in preparation for the official iPhone/iPod Touch SDK release next month and the onslaught of officially Apple licensed applications that it will inspire.
  • You can add Safari bookmarks as icons on your home screen for one touch bookmarks access.
  • The ability to send SMS messages to multiple recipients (anyone else get really annoyed when their friends send spam SMS to everyone? gah.)

I'm excited about the feature additions to Google Maps, as that and Safari are my most used applications on my iPhone. Google Maps was a life saver as I drove around my parents' home town of Houston, TX last week; its crack addled arrangement of streets that look like they were thrown on the map by a child on a sugar rush with random names is almost too much chaos to navigate for someone used to a nice orderly grid system with avenue and street numbers like me.

Holy crap, I didn't know you lived in Houston!

We'll have to hang out next time I'm there!

Do you live in Phoenix? That's the most grid-like city I've ever seen, and I grew up there, so my own experience in San Francsco, Austin, heck, just about anywhere BUT Phoenix is like following the random meanderings of drunken 17th Century cows.

I love me my Google Maps on the iPhone. That's the feature that sold me on getting one.
