Seagate's D.A.V.E.: The Coolest HDD Ever!

seagate_dave.jpg

I'm not exactly sure how I missed this during CES, but man is it cool: Seagate has come up with a new portable storage solution called D.A.V.E. (Digital Audio Video Experience.)

The really awesome part? It's small, compact, packs 60GB, USB 2.0, Bluetooth, and WiFi 802.11g - which means almost anything you have can connect to it.

And connect it can - D.A.V.E. runs a linux server that can serve up media using Samba, uPnP, http, and all kinds of other protocols. As you can see in the picture, an iPhone is connected to D.A.V.E., browsing its files via http. D.A.V.E. is also a platform that, thanks to the linux server contained inside, can be expanded and hacked to incorporate a whole range of file transfer/serving protocols that you may need.

Way too cool.

The bad part? Seagate is only marketing D.A.V.E. to OEM developers, not as a separate consumer product. Harman-Becker and Nokia have been rumoured to be using D.A.V.E. in some of their upcoming products, so perhaps we'll be able to get our paws on a D.A.V.E. soon.

I'd love to see what I could get it to do by hacking it.

Thanks to Scootiep, a member of my WoW guild, for the link.
