BREAKING NEWS: HD Format War Is Over!

hd_dvd_is_dead.gif

HD-DVD fans, I have the worst news ever for you: the format war is now over and Blu-ray has emerged the victor.

Reuters reports on word from Toshiba that they are in the process of dismantling their HD-DVD production facilities and will be making an official announcement soon:

Japanese public broadcaster NHK had earlier reported that Toshiba would suffer losses in the tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) as it scrapped production of HD DVD players and recorders and took other steps to exit the business.

The company source told Reuters that Toshiba was in the final stages of planning to exit the HD DVD business and that an official decision would be made soon.

Will this have an effect on the console wars? We'll see in the coming months!

So drastic. I wanted the Blu-Ray victory because it's better technology and the world just won't accept two replacements for one format, but I'd hoped they could land a little more gracefully instead of burning down the whole village. I guess that's business, but someone had better be willing to make HD DVD backwards-compatible players for at least a few years.

Well, I do have a feeling this will affect the console wars. People that are on the bubble will be more willing now. And I think there will be more people willing to buy a multi-purpose machine now that they know for sure that the usefulness will be there. It's one of the biggest reasons the PS2 was so successful.

XBOX has a strong lead now though, so I'm not sure yet. We'll have to wait and see!
