Does iPod Classic Firmware Update Damage Headphones?

February sees reports that the new firmware for current iPod Classic units (80GB and 160GB) could be causing harm to their music systems or headphones. Users have begun complaining that iPod Classics updated to firmware version 1.1 are pumping out unwanted electric pulses through the headphone jack and the docking connection.
The pulses measure at 500mv of delicious DC energy, and seem to be occurring when the iPod is turned off. The pulses could damage any connected equipment. The reports also include users experiencing a telltale buzz or hiss during playback after installing the update.
Naturally there hasn't been confirmation or information from Apple yet, but if you haven't upgraded your iPod Classic firmware yet, there might be good reason to hold off for now.
