HD Format War Update: Sales Through 02/03/2008

It seems the last week of January and the beginning of February have been kind to HD-DVD, with the format jumping up 8% to push Blu-ray back to a still sizeable 74% chunk in the weekly sales charts.

Riding this small HD-DVD resurgence, two HD-DVD titles have found themselves in the top HD disc sellers charts this week, finally ending Blu-ray's weeks long monopoly on the charts:

  1. 3:10 to Yuma (Blu-ray)
  2. Planet Earth: The Complete Series (Blu-ray)
  3. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Blu-ray)
  4. Saw IV (Blu-ray)
  5. Transformers (HD-DVD)
  6. 300 (Blu-ray)
  7. The Bourne Supremacy (HD-DVD)
  8. The Game Plan (Blu-ray)
  9. The Invasion (Blu-ray)
  10. Ratatouille (Blu-ray)

Could this be the resurgence HD-DVD's been looking for? Is Toshiba's move to put an HD-DVD commercial in the Super Bowl paying off? Well have to see if the surge in HD-DVD sales sticks around for another week, or if this is just an anomaly.

I just got an e-mail from Netflix that they're dumping HD DVD.

"While we will continue to make our current selection of HD DVD titles available to you for the next several months, we will not be adding additional HD DVD titles or reordering replacements.

"Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs. Don't worry, we will contact you before this happens."

It was over the day Warner announced, and if it hadn't happened then, it would have happened when they tried to fit a Lord of the Rings movie on an HD DVD. HD DVD had the bells and whistles, but only one of the formats was any good for full-length HD movies, and it won, so I'm happy.
