MacBook Air Undressed

macbook_air_teardown.jpg

iFixit has posted a great step by step tear down and analysis of all the MacBook Air's components, bringing to light some interesting tidbits of information:

  • As Gizmodo pointed out earlier, the battery is surprisingly easy to replace, and should allow those with only rudimentary hardware skills and a willingness to void their warranty to replace the battery themselves.
  • As I reported during my keynote coverage, the MagSafe power adapter of the MacBook Air is different from other MacBooks in order to accommodate its bevelled shape.
  • The MacBook Air uses the same touchpad technolody and control chips as the iPhone and iPod Touch, which means you can expect a lot of cool little mods and haxies from either Apple or third parties like we've seen with the acceleration sensors in previous MacBooks.
  • The MacBook Air only has space for a 5mm high hard drive, which means it only has room for a single platter 1.8" HDD. This is why we haven't seen the 180GB HDD from the iPod Classic on the MacBook Air, and why it is currently limited to 80GB max storage.
  • The memory is soldered onto the motherboard. Not user replaceable or upgradeable.
  • The screen is only 3mm thick and weighs only 465g (less than a pound!)

Hit the link for even more details such as chip maker and model numbers and pictures of the MacBook Air laid bare for all to see.
