Video: Superbowl Doritos Musician's Deliciously Geeky Roots

Superbowl Sunday for me is usually an occasion for me to set the TiVo to record the game only to use the TiVo's functions in exactly the opposite way I do the rest of the year - to skip over the program and watch the commercials, but this year was different.

This year, I was informed by my more sports oriented friends (who lack their own HDTVs) that it was my civic duty as a US citizen (nevermind my Venezuelan and Spanish citizenships) and HDTV owner to watch the game (with them present, of course!) live in HD, so in order to make them happy, we watched the game at my place.

The commercials this year were actually pretty lame, but one in particular caught my attention: the Doritos showcase of Kina Grannis.

As soon as she began singing my ears perked up and I immediately demanded for her name again and wrote it down. Imagine the wonderful surprise I got when I discovered that not only is she a wonderful singer/songwriter, but that she also has some deliciously geeky roots!

Here she is in one of her original youtube videos which got her some of her original fans and attention, where she sings about Digg:

I couldn't keep myself from completely geeking out when watching it - my mouth stayed open in a stupid grin. Music and technology are two of my passions and seeing someone combine them like this (and getting actual attention) is a real treat. My favourite line in the song: "I always digg up Apple, and I bury Microsoft" - if I was straight I would ask her to marry me.

Hit the jump for a video of the song featured in the Superbowl commercial, named Message From Your Heart, which has now been professionally produced and is available on iTunes.

Wait. I understand it all now. The meaning of life is to get her and Jonathan Coulton to MATE. It's all so simple and clear now.

Can you imagine how awesome her and Jonathan Coulton together would be?!

I thought the same thing as I watched "Gotta Digg."

It'd be geek music central.
