IE 8 Beta Details

ScreenActivities.png

Activities and WebSlices - such are the two new features highlighted by Microsoft in the current beta build of IE 8. Activities are "contextual services to quickly access a service from any webpage. Users typically copy and paste from one webpage to another. Internet Explorer 8 Activities make this common pattern easier to do." In other words, it's a contextual pop-up menu that will let users, say, open a map to the restaurant they're reading up on, as well as things like Digg, search, define, and so forth.

WebSlices is a little harder to parse - the feature allows users to subscribe directly to content within a webpage, which is then monitored like a feed. The WebSlices can be added to the favorites bar - it sounds like an easily-accessible shortcut to particular content, but I'll have to see it in action before I'll be convinced it isn't more Microbloat like the umpteen info panels built into the file explorer windows of Vista. If Apple could teach MS just one thing, I'd love for it to be the concept of simplicity...

So... Activities is a copycat of the contextual information grabber from Mail in OS X... and WebSlices is Web Clips from Safari.

Oh Microsoft, you never fail to copy.
