Rumorama: Microsoft And Apple Finally Going Blu?

Xbox 360 + Blu-ray?

Sony Electronics US President Stan Glasgow has let the cat out of the bag and told The Financial Times that Microsoft is in talks with Sony about adding Blu-ray capabilities to the Xbox 360 after last month's Blu-ray victory:

[Sony] has until now touted Blu-ray as an advantage its PlayStation 3 holds over Microsoft’s console. Microsoft has backed Toshiba’s HD-DVD format and offered an HD-DVD drive that can be plugged into the 360.

But after Sony’s victory last month in the high-definition DVD format war, Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics US president, said the two sides were now talking about Microsoft adopting Blu-ray.

Rumours are that Microsoft will do one of two things: make a super deluxe premium Xbox 360 (we all know from Vista that Microsoft just *loves* 8976546 versions of the same product) with a built-in Blu-ray drive (highly unlikely, I think) or make a plug-in Blu-ray add-on drive just like the add-on HD-DVD drive (bingo.)

The rumours don't stop with Microsoft; however, as Glasgow also spilled the beans on another high profile company that has yet to see Blu-ray in its products - Apple:

Mr Glasgow, speaking at a media dinner, added that discussions were also taking place with Apple, which has not offered Blu-ray drives on any of its computers so far and has focused on digital media via downloads and streaming through devices such as its Apple TV.

We knew it was coming, but the question is: Will it be exclusive to the high end MacBook Pros and Mac Pros?

you know, apple is on the board of directors for the blu-ray disc association. So, I'm fairly conviced that, like the super-drive, which is now in all of their products, various forms of blu-ray drives (up to the re-writable, dual-layer 50GB media capable drives) will eventually be in all of their products…as soon as it's cost-effective.

What I mean to say is that apple, dell, HP, HItachi, LG, MitsubishiPanasonic, Pinoeer, Philips (Magnavox), Samsung, Sharp, Sun, and TDK won just as much Sony. But nobody seems to remember that.
