Apple Tries To Take A Bite Out Of The Big Apple

GreeNYC_logo_bag.jpg

It seems we're in for a vegetarian massacre as the arguably two biggest "apples" in the United States square off in a trademark dispute.

New York City recently unveiled a new logo for its GreeNYC initiative, shown on the bag in the picture, which depicts a stylised apple that resembles Apple, Inc.'s famous logo. New York City has filed for a trademark on the new GreeNYC logo, but Apple quickly fired back with a formal opposition, exclaiming "no wai!" (Wired has a copy of the Apple Inc.'s opposition filing in pdf)

The logo is currently being used by NYC to mark hybrid taxi cabs, mass transit stops, and, as in the case of the pictured bag, in a partnership with Whole Foods.

Apple claims NYC's use of a logo that looks too close to their famous "apple" logo (boy writting "apple" this many times feels strange) defames the company and associates Apple, Inc. with a bad consumer image (I guess those hybrid taxi cabs don't look cool enough - yellow is *so* last century!)

I'm not really sure how using a stylised "apple" logo to mark environmentally friendly initiatives by the biggest city in the US constitutes a sullying of Apple, Inc.'s name (specially given Apple, Inc.'s standing with Greenpeace), but unfortunately a company is obligated to legally fight any perceived trademark infringements or risk loosing their trademark themselves.

Let the fight begin!
