AT&T and Sony announced a new partnership today: bringing streaming movies to AT&T phones! Owners of the LG Vu and the Samsung Access will now be able to stream Sony movies directly to their handsets starting in May, assuming those subscribers have signed up for the movie service. Pricing plans for the new service have yet to be announced, but I'd expect a $5-$10 charge per month,

So, it's all cool, right? Streaming movies on your phone. Whenever you want it. Wherever you are. Like in a theater watching whatever new romantic comedy you got dragged to. What could suck about that? Well, a few things. It's not an on-demand service at all. It's more like a regular movie channel, with programmed times for movies. That's ok for cable, especially considering we can now DVR anything and watch it when you want, but for the mobile market, that just doesn't make sense. People will use the service on the bus or train, or on a car trip, but for the most part, it'll be short bursts, so being able to stream and pause and such would be very nice. The second not-so-awesome feature is that all the movies on the service are old. I mean, pretty damn old. Like movies that they don't even want to show on TV anymore, like Ghostbusters and Karate Kid. So nothing you haven't already seen a billion times.

Hey, it's a start, right? Being the eternal optimist, I would like to think that this is a good thing, but I have to look at this wonder why bother if you aren't going to do it right? If you actually think this sounds cool, look for this come May, and make sure to dump that crappy, limited iPhone for an LG Vu and additional monthly fees.
