European Parliament Says 'No' To Banning Filesharers

The European Parliament has voted down a fairly frightening plan to ban illegal filesharers, under which those found to be sharing files illegally might have had their ISPs close down their internet connection - potentially for good.
Luckily, Parliament realized that such stentorian actions are not good for anybody's business, according to spokeswoman Malene Folke Chaucheprat:
"The vote shows that MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) want to strike a balance between the interests of rights holders and those of consumers, and that big measures like cutting off Internet access shouldn't be used..."
However, the vote didn't see that sentiment held unanimously, as it was split 313-297 against bans. Add that to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's pressure for ISP-level control in the UK, and you won't see advocacy of ISP-level control go away any time soon on either side of the pond.
