Online Lyrics Become "Legit" With MetroLyrics; MetroLyrics Riddled With Errors
I was all sorts of excited when I read that MetroLyrics was pairing with Gracenote to legitimize online lyric search engines, giving a portion of ad revenue to music publishers. I can't tell you how many times I've encountered horrible, ad-riddled sites only to receive misspelled and inaccurate results.
Then I checked MetroLyrics out, only to see it's far worse than any site I've previously visited.
Many artists are missing; the site is poorly organized and ugly-looking; and submissions have some of the worst misspellings and grammatical errors I've encountered this side of elementary school.
MetroLyrics' submission engine will funnel lyrics submitted by its users to a Gracenote database where they can be cleared by publishers and cleaned up by Gracenote's staff of lyrics scribes. According to Jim Hollingsworth, SVP of sales and marketing at Gracenote, the company has at times had nearly 100 people working on its lyrics and began transcribing about four years ago.
If by "100 people working" they mean "100 people sleeping and taking unannounced, frequent smoke breaks."
Gracenote has never really done me wrong, but they have a full day of work ahead of them if they want MetroLyrics to go anywhere. For now, I recommend SongMeanings.net. Not only do you get a decent array of lyrics, you also get user-written interpretations (which are often stupid and hilarious).
