Billy G. Gives Final Speech, Nothing Spectacular

bill-gates-1983.jpg

Which kind of stinks. I was hoping for Bill Gates' last official speech as an employee of Microsoft to be more exciting, with a few more bells and whistles and fireworks or something. At the very least a few strippers. Ok, robot strippers. But anyway.

Gates delivered his last speech as an official rep. for Microsoft last night at TechED, speaking to a crowded room of developers. In his speech, he donned his cap of +4 "we've heard it before," stating that developers are the key to success for Microsoft. Even in his last days with the company, Gates is still propagating his agenda of developer dominance. He also briefly touched on the human-interface design technology that MS is working on, and although no real specifics were mentioned (aside from touch screen tech that we've heard about already), he harped a bit more on the importance of shaping computer tech around the person rather than the other way around.

Beginning July 1, Bill will be devoting most of his time to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where he is expected to continue his fight for AIDs research and relief in Africa (Hopefully, he can convince the Ugandan government that refusing to help GLBT's with AIDS is a bad idea and won't help the epidemic). I'm half expecting some sort of fare-well speech, but I'm also pretty aware that won't happen.

Even if he is a bit controversial (or at least his company is), there is no denying the impact Gates has had on technology and our daily lives.

I was kind of sad about this, too. But then again, I think that's Gates' understated charm. He's not a big flaming showman like Jobs; he knows it's about the tech and the science and the people, not about the whiz-bang fireworks Apple blows outta their ass every couple of months (and then retracts, builds something better, and skyrockets already inflated prices).

But that's neither here nor there.

I love Bill Gates. He and I should be best friends. I own a Mac and an iPod but I think Gates is far more charming and realistic as a human being than Steve Jobs, who appears, to me, to be a product of a marketing team of brainstormers.

Gee I thought this post was about how Gates was retiring, not about how much you dislike Steve Jobs Neon. Jealous Much?!?!
