Deal Or No Deal: $10 More For Data On 3G iPhone?

carpetbagger-cartoon.jpg

Well, along with other news that AT&T is trying to nickel and dime people, comes confirmation that the iPhone 3G's data plan will be an additional $10 per month for the average consumer, and $25 for business users. For those keeping tabs, that's $30/month and $45/month respectively. Voice plans will remain the standard AT&T voice pricing plans.

Sounds like crap initially, but you will be getting 3G speeds, and AT&T did recently do a complete overhaul of their 3G network for this phone, so maybe that extra $10 will be worth it? I've never been on a 3G network, so I can't personally attest to the actual efficiency boost of 3G vs. EDGE (although Apple claims a 2.8x speed boost). I'm not sure that faster speeds will necessarily mean more data being transferred though. I have a feeling that people are habitual by nature and will simply use the phone the same way regardless of speed.

So I leave it to you my dear readers! Is an additional $10 a month for 3G data speeds worth it? Are we being ripped off, or are these charges legit? Sound off in the comments!

I work for the AT&T that you speak of, in the wireless side of the house.

The iPhone data price is still less than blackberry and other data pricing, so it is a bit more, but I think it is still a good price for what you get.

And I used to have an edge phone and went 3G and I honestly feel that you get much better service and experience on the 3G side and that $10 is a small price for a huge upgrade in service.

$10 a month extra for the plan, $12.50 per month less for the phone…
(499 {old iphone} - 199 {new iphone} / 24 {length of term} = 12.5)

You know, you could put $26.54 per month for the phone and plan into a low-yield savings account, and in two years, you'd have enough to buy the phone, pay for the extra cost in the plan, and depending on your interest yield, buy yourself a couple of accessories for the iPhone that will have been announced by the time you've saved up.

I'm just saying…

Your math is incorrect. You're comparing the price of the old 16GB with the price of the 3G 8GB.

The correct math is:

($399 - $199) / 24 = $8.33

Seeing as you're paying $10/month more, that's a net deficit of $1.67/month.

the average power mobile phone user (in other words, a business user) will download an average of 10.38 Mb per month including their email and atachments. The average iPhone user will download 158.27 Mb per month, NOT including their email! Is the $10 more a month worth it considering that I am pretty sure I download way more than that, and its faster! I'd say yeah, I'm okay with that.
