WWDC 2008: iPhone 3G Announced!

As expected, Apple has released their new version of the iPhone, named the iPhone 3G!
The new iPhone 3G features a glossy black backplate standard, with most of the features we expected to see:
- 3G Network access. Twice as fast as EDGE on current iPhone.
- GPS built-in, for accurate location tracking.
- All metal buttons.
- Headphone jack sits flush with outside (no more crazy adapters for your headphones!)
- 300 hours standby time. 5 hours 3G talk time (10 hours if you disable 3G.) 5-6 hours of 3G web browsing, 7 hours of video playback, 24 hours of audio playback.
- iPhone Software v2.0, with App Store.
Nothing really shocking in the features department, but Steve did actually shock us with the iPhone 3G's price:
$199 for the 8GB iPhone 3G and $299 for the 16GB iPhone 3G (which is also available in a white backed version.)
That's half the price of the current generation of iPhone.
This means Apple has now hit that magic $200 price point most consumers have said they'd spring for a smart phone, which should catapult iPhone 3G into even more mainstream use. Nice going, Apple.
The bad part? You'll have to wait until July 11 to get your paws on one. Damn.
Apple has also released their new TV commercial for the iPhone 3G, which I'm sure you'll catch everywhere on TV soon, but if you're a fellow TiVo user, you can catch the commercial on Apple's site.
