iPhone 3G Reception Problems Not Unique To AT&T [UPDATED]
It seems Jesse James is not alone with the bad 3G reception he's been getting on his new iPhone 3G. Gearlog reports that the problems with 3G reception are widespread, with over 600 messages on Apple's official support discussion boards complaining about the issue.
It seems the problem isn't on AT&T's end, either:
One thing to be sure of: It's not an AT&T problem. I've now seen reports from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, Sweden, France, Germany and Switzerland.
There have been a few explanations put forth, but nothing official from Apple yet. One theory posits that it's a software bug relating to iPhone 3Gs that have been restored with data from backed up iPhone EDGEs, but I've gotten flawless 3G reception in both Miami and Orlando with my iPhone 3G after restoring the data from my old iPhone. Jesse James did not have an old iPhone so there was no data to restore and cause his reception issues.
A second explanation was put forth by an O2 (Britain's iPhone 3G service provider) employee who says there was a bad batch of antennas in the first run of iPhone 3Gs, but I'm also wary of that explanation because Jesse James and I both have black 16GB iPhone 3Gs from launch day. (UPDATE: I was wrong, Jesse James has a white 16GB, and I have a black 16GB, both are from launch day. Perhaps the bad batch of antennas is endemic to the white model?)
Bottom line: there definitely appears to be an issue, but until Apple deigns to tell us peons what it is (and I doubt they will until they have a solution handy - such is their way), we won't know for sure. I'm just happy I'm not suffering from it (sorry Jesse!)

Yeah, yeah... I tell ya, I have the worst of luck! Anyway, in the meantime, AT&T customer service will be receiving updates from everyday I go with multiple dropped calls, or sitting in my new place next to my boyfriend who has the same phone as me while he gets full 3G signal and I get a couple GPRS bars...
PS, I nabbed the white one, shows less smudges, but I did get it on launch. ;)

Updated the story with the correct information - could have sworn you had a black one.
I went with black merely b/c the silver Apple looks a lot cooler on the black background than on the white background.
