'Suck It Kindle, Readius Is My God Now!'

readius.jpg

I always pack too many books. It's a security blanket, because I'm terrified I'll run out of reading material again, just like I did as a kid on the third day of a three-week safari. I tell you this to illustrate my personal investment in the concept of a portable library, such as offered by Amazon's Kindle or, now, Readius. Despite my phobia of being bookless, the idea of an e-reader still seems like the ice cube an Eskimo bought.

Books are lovely. They almost always work.

Do I really need to replace books with another gadget to charge? Is saving space the same as saving hassle, or improving my reading experience?

The new e-reader on the block seems to say "Yes!" with its 30hr battery life, flexible screen, small size, Bluetooth, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS/HSDPA, DVB-H and some other letters that I don't understand.

Flexible screens are definitely an upgrade to the concept of the electric book. But as long as you're making my book electric...why in the world would you omit WiFi?

Seriously, my shiny new electric book has a freaking TV receiver but can't hop onto a wireless network to download, I dunno, a new book to read?

My suggested sales pitch: "Buy our book: it's a great TV!"

I wouldn't need an e-book reader if they made some of my favorite books pocket size...
