Del.icio.us Redesign Is Tasty, And Delicious.com-y
It's about time! Del.icio.us, the popular social/cloud bookmarking tool, released a redesign of their site to make using it, well, useful! The video above gives a short clip into most of the new features of the site, but I'll expand on a few in a moment (PS, Flickr Video - the fact that I have to sign into Flickr to get the embed code for your videos is ridiculous. Just saying...).
Most of the changes are very cosmetic. The look and feel of the site, while maintaining the classic blue and white design, seems more clean and useful at the same time. Tags are organized more efficiently, and posts are listed in a more intuitive fashion. The real kicker is the search: it works, and it's quick. Searching for just about anything, whether it be within your own posts or amongst all Del.icio.us posts, is smoother overall, making the service fun and usable. Oh, and the fact that it's no longer Del.icio.us, it's now a more normalized Delicious.com.
The reason these social bookmarking services exist is for ease of search. For example, if I type in "Gay" and "tech" into Google, I get a lot of irrelevant links, but using a site like Delicious, I can narrow the search to what real people think is Gay and Tech, not what some algorithm thinks that search means. Google is great for things like finding websites or information, but for finding stories or blogs or more specific information, Delicious is perfect.
I've liked Delicious for a while and have been casually using it for about a year or so, but the old interface was clunky and not very friendly. However, I think I'll be digging into Delicious quite a bit more now, given the redesign. Hit me up on there if you'd like to join my network and see what all the fuss is about Delicious 2. Oh, one down side: the one word tag limitation is still in effect. Sucks, I know, but not a killer for me. See y'all there!
