Gadget Of The Week: Mini & Mega Kensington iPhone Battery Packs

I remember using an external iPod battery pack way back in the dark ages of 1998 2003 - it added no fewer than 20 amazing hours to my little white noise-brick, and I used it to listen to music during college lectures with all kinds of impunity.
So my recent purchase of the $69.99 Kensington Battery Pack and Charger for iPhone and iPod was simultaneously a blast from the past and a modern moment: this sleek little black item sports a charger with USB in and USB out so you can charge both the pack and the iPhone at the same time, and claims to add 100 hours of music, 21 hours of video and 6 hours of talk.
My impromptu tests during vacation last week didn't quite reach those numbers, but the battery pack was able to fully recharge my iPhone without dimming more than two of its five blue LED power indicators, and was unintrusive when plugged in to power my The Closer addiction during the long drive to and from the Jersey shore.
On top of that, the unit's mini USB cable means that the battery pack can give juice to other devices, phones and PDAs.
Kensington also makes a Mini Battery Extender and Charger for iPod and iPhone that snaps on to the end of your phone, for those who appreciate improved portability and a smaller $49.99 price tag.

Within one hour of its unboxing, The One became the undisputed ruler of Tiny's entire home. Buy this or despair.
Hey McFly!
When did your DeLorean hit those 88mph so you could use a battery pack for an iPod in 1998 when the first iPod wasn't released until October 2001? :-)
