Gadget Of The Week: USB 3.0

Some hail it as "universal cable nirvana," or "SuperSpeed USB," while others whisper the words "USB 3.0" in secret high-tech lairs, unable to believe something as magnificent as 4.8Gbit/s transfer speeds could ever be realized. Still others call it "Daddy," and anxiously await its arrival, approval, and high-limit credit cards.
However you slice it, the USB 3.0 spec that saw the light of day this month is an exciting thing. Just as exciting is Fresno Logic's working demo, which debuted at the Intel Developer Forum.
With nine years of USB 2.0 under our belts, USB 3.0 sounds like some kind of engineering fever-dream: on paper it's ten times as fast as USB 2.0, achieving theoretical speeds of 600MB/s. And even though Fresno Logic's demo only blew USB 2.0 away by a factor of about five, with transfer speeds at 350MB/s, that's still plenty fine for a pre-pre-pre beta test.
