iPhone 3G Woes: Lousy Chipset?

infineon.gif

Reports of the iPhone 3G's relatively spotty 3G connection issues have poured in from every conceivable corner of the globe, virtually eliminating AT&T as the source of the problem for US customers. In fact, the uniformity of the complaints (from Europe and even Japan) assures us that the fault lies within the iPhone 3G's hardware.

Now Nomura Securities analyst Richard Windsor has a more specific finger to point:

"We believe that these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack where we are almost certain Infineon is the 3G supplier."

If true, this could send a signal to the chip industry that quality control ought to be beefed up - as chipset problems discovered after a product releases can clearly call down a massive firestorm of negative press.

It also means that it's unlikely the issue can be resolved with a firmware update, and would signal the second major chipset disaster this summer, after Nvidia's $200 million mobile GPU catastrophe.

This sucks! I sent mine back and my new one should be here tomorrow... hope at least some of my previously reported woes are resolved :(

The question then inherently becomes: will apple be willing to take in 3g phones with the faulty chip and replace it for us?

Kind of like their iPod battery fiasco?

I'm not sure, but I'm thinking the alternatives towards replacing the chip for free might be rather dire for apple when it comes to the popularity or even continued use of their iPhones.
