Chinese iPhone Missing WiFi & 3G

Thanks to political pressure from state-owned China Mobile, the iPhone that Chinese customers see may be a heavily stripped-down version of the popular smartphone. China's government has been pushing their TD-SCDMA 3G protocol over Western standards - such as the iPhone 3G's HSPA. This means Apple could end up customizing hardware specifically for China; that's a kind of region-specific redesign that we haven't seen elsewhere.
But with 415 million mobile subscribers, China's market is hard to ignore, political grandstanding or no. Chinafolk bought 28 million phones in 2007 that were priced at $533 or higher, leaving a great big cut for Apple if it closes a deal to sell the iPhone in China later this year.
