Wanda Sykes Says Enough Already With "That's So Gay"
You hear it all the time. Hell, some of us even say it all the time. The phrase "that's so gay."
Some times, and mind you by some I mean rarely, that phrase is used in a correct context. Hardly ever a nice context, but if you were to say that I am so gay, you'd be accurate. I am that gay. I printed off the Puking Panda thing and posted it at work just for the rainbow. That's me.
But most often, the phrase is used in an outright derogatory manor. Referring to common situations as being "so gay," when really the person means stupid or bad, is, well, stupid and bad. It's equating homosexuality with being undesirable, and mostly through subtle context that can be more harmful than out right verbal assaults.
That's why the Advertising Council has come forth and created a new ad campaign and interactive website around educating youth about the negative impact a simple phrase can have. The website, Think B4 You Speak, features ads from celebrities like Wanda Sykes (luvs her!) and Hillary Duff speaking out against the ignorant use of the phrase, as well as some interactive elements to help people get involved in the movement for LGBT education in schools.
Check out the site, it's pretty well put together and the videos are well done as well. I know we've all been fighting this phenomenon for some time, and this might just help to make it a little easier.
