Video: Multiple Kill Vehicle, Invading Your Nightmares.

I was reading through a particular scene in Scott Westerfeld's Specials last night (the third book in the Uglies series, which is an excellent sci-fi young adult series, btw) that involved hovering automated killer robots, and afterwards I had some horrible dreams of being chased by malevolent killer automatons. Thankfully I was comforted by the thought that these types of robots only exist in some nebulous apocalyptic future...

...except the future is now. Feast your eyes on the Missile Defence Agency's MKV-L (that's Multiple Kill Vehicle), a hovering robot designed to seek out and destroy missiles:

Great. Now my nightmares are going to be that much more realistic.

The geeky robot designer in me; however, is pretty stoked about the really cool technology (and painful amounts of programming) that enables the hovering action to work. Very cool indeed.

Ohhh-kay ... Seems like an awful lot of fuel being used during that short demo. I can't imagine it being practical ... yet.

But it was interesting to watch the side-thrusters blink on and off, keeping it stabilized.
