Adult Expo 2009: Rental Porn Is New Again

One of my personal favorite things about CES actually has nothing to do with CES... technically. It's that the Adult Expo runs at the same time in Vegas every year, showing off the newest and latest in porn and porn tech. This year's show has plenty of neat toys and things to play with, but one of the more interesting ideas to come out of the show is the idea of rental porn.

Well, OK, rental porn has been around for just about as long as porn itself. But this is different! Many companies showed new rental kiosks similar to the Red Boxes that have been popping in every grocery store all over the country, but the one that intrigued me is the USB rental kiosk. Bring your own USB thumb drive then choose the flick you want to rent, and the movie is downloaded to your personal drive and you're good to go. Depending on the format the file is and what phone you have, you may even be able to start enjoying your new film right away!

Now, the technologists in us says that this just gives people an easy way to steal movies. Pay the rental fee to get the flick, then once you get home just copy it over to your hard drive. Even if they have some copy protection or whatnot, I'm sure it won't take long to circumvent. However, and idea like this could really serve to help the industry. If people are willing to pay even a few dollars to "rent" the movie versus just downloading it free and illegally online, then the industry comes out ahead.

I can't say when to start looking for the new porn stalls, but keep your eyes open for the dawn of the new porn rental.
