Clearwire Announces First WiMAX/Wi-Fi Portable Router

Don't you just love living in the future, sometimes? Like this week, for instance, when the folks at Clearwire displayed a prototype for their upcoming portable WiMAX/Wi-Fi router. Now that the WiMAX service has been officially launched in Portland, Clearwire is opening up about some of the technology we'll begin to see take advantage of the new 4G wireless broadband network.

Unlike current mobile data solutions, the Clearwire router relies upon a USB stick to allow multiple users to connect to the internet. The technology is so promising that Clearwire's Scott Richardson predicts huge, iPhone-style success - since every Wi-Fi enabled device will be able to take advantage of speeds considerably faster than 3G:

"Just connecting the devices that already exist is a big business for us," Richardson said. "I see every iPhone user as a future customer."

The unit goes on sale in Portland sometime in February for a non-finalized price of $125.
